After weighing in at 7lb., 13 oz. (below birth weight) for 2 weight checks, the pediatritian sent Roe and me to a lactation specialist. She noticed Roe had a high respiratory rate after nursing and at rest. Two days later, still weighing the same, we were sent to get an echocardiogram and chest x-ray. The chest x-ray revealed pneumonia so Roe, at 3 weeks of age, was admitted to the hospital that evening to begin IV antibiotics. He responded well, but had to stay the whole week to receive the full treatment of IV antibiotics.
By far the hardest part of the stay is having your baby stuck for IV placement. For each sucsessful "stick", there were multiple unsuccessful attempts mainly due to the small size of infants' veins. Roe needed 3 different IV sites over the course of his stay. His weight is now up to 8lb., 11 oz. Roe seems to be doing very well back at home, and will have another weight check this week and another chest x-ray in a couple of weeks. You would think that this would be a piece of cake for us because of the boys' early weeks, but it never is easy.
I want to say thank you to all the friends and family who helped take care of Drew and Grayson while I stayed with Roe in the hospital. It was difficult to be away from my big boys, but I was blessed tremendously by the outpouring of love and support for my family during this time. Thank you Mom, Dad, Cari, Pat, Laura, Julie, Robyn, Jana, and Carol!!
